Small business websites are frequent targets because attackers look for weak admin panels, reused passwords, and outdated plugins. You do not need an enterprise security team to raise your baseline dramatically.

Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication for hosting, domain, email, and CMS admin accounts. A single compromised mailbox can reset everything else.

Keep software updated. Most WordPress and CMS breaches still come from known vulnerabilities in abandoned plugins and themes. Remove what you do not use.

Backups must be automated, off-site, and tested. A backup you have never restored is only a hope. Encrypt admin traffic with HTTPS everywhere and restrict login endpoints where possible.

Also protect the human layer: phishing is still the most common entry point. Train staff not to approve unexpected MFA prompts or open invoice attachments from unfamiliar senders.

Security is not a one-time project. Schedule quarterly reviews of users, plugins, DNS records, and payment integrations. That cadence stops small issues from becoming public incidents.
